The concept of “smart city” is defined as a “knowledge”, “digital”, or “eco” city; representing a concept open to a variety of interpretations. It integrates state of the art green technologies to create cities that are both sustainable and can provide high living standards. To realize this concept, critical-thinking problem solvers from all disciplines apply the principles of human-centered, model-based design, applications of technology, policy and business for sustainability to the challenges a modern city faces in energy, public safety, transportation, health care, and economic development.
Developing better approaches for the creation of better cities, is therefore, a global challenge. We need to improve our understanding of cities, not only by the social relevance of urban environments but also by the introduction of effective strategies for city-scale interventions that are enabled by evolving technologies.
